In certain situations, you have the right to claim compensation for a flight that has been delayed or canceled.
When can I claim compensation
You may be qualified for compensation if you experience a delay of over three hours at your final destination because of reasons within airlines control (excluding extraordinary circumstances that couldn't have been avoided with reasonable measures).
Moreover, if the airline cancel your flight less than 14 days prior the planned departure date for reasons within airways control (excluding extraordinary circumstances), you may also be eligible to compensation unless:
We notify you of the cancellation between 7 and 13 days before departure and provide an alternative route that permits you to leave no more than two hours before the scheduled departure and arrive at your final destination less than four hours after the scheduled arrival time, or
We notify you of the cancellation less than 7 days prior departure and provide an alternative route that permits you to leave no more than one hour before the scheduled departure and arrive at your final destination less than two hours after the scheduled arrival time.
When I’m not Eligible for Compensation
You are not qualified for compensation if the delay is less than three hours.
If British Airways informed you of the cancellation 14 days or more before your scheduled departure, you are not eligible for compensation. The airline will contact you using the information submitted by you, the ticket purchaser, or your travel agent during the booking process.
If you prefer departing from a different location or travel to a different destination than originally booked, you cannot seek compensation for any related expenses, such as travel between these points or other costs like car hire and parking fees.
You may not be eligible for compensation if your journey was disrupted because of extraordinary circumstances, including air traffic control decisions, political instability, severe weather conditions, or security risks.
How much compensation will I receive
EU regulations limit compensation amounts as follows:
EUR 250 / GBP 220 for flights of 1500 km or less
EUR 400 / GBP 350 for flights between 1500 km and 3500 km
EUR 600 / GBP 520 for flights over 3500 km
These compensation amounts are reduced by 50% if the airlines provides you an alternative flight that reaches your final destination with a new arrival time no more than:
Two hours later for flights up to 1500 km
Three hours later for flights between 1500 km and 3500 km
Four hours later for flights over 3500 km
How to claim compensation
To submit a claim on account of someone else, you must provide a signed letter of authorization from each passenger included in the claim.
Include your name and contact information, the names and contact details of the other passengers, your booking reference, and information about the canceled flight.
You can seek compensation for all eligible passengers on the same booking. However, if travelers have different last names, British Airways will need authorization to discuss their details and process their payment.
