If your flight was canceled, delayed, or rebooked, you might be eligible for compensation or reimbursement for unexpected expenses. Know about your options to see what you're qualified for.

Compensation For KLM Flight Delay

You may be qualified for a fixed amount of compensation if you meet the following three criteria:

Your flight was delayed or canceled, resulting in an arrival time more than three hours later than actually scheduled.

You were traveling on a flight departing from an airport in the EU, or on a flight operated by a Community air carrier departing from an airport in a third country to an airport in the EU, unless local regulations in that third country apply.

The delay or cancellation was because of sudden circumstances such as extreme weather, political instability, or third-party strikes.

KLM Airlines Compensation Voucher Types

If you’re qualified for compensation, you will obtain a travel voucher, also known as an EMD voucher. The amount of compensation differs depending on the type of voucher. Here’s what applies to your trip:

  • For original flights of 1,500 km or less, you receive Voucher Type A valued at EUR 350 (non-refundable) or EUR 250 (cash payment).

  • For original flights within the EU over 1,500 km, or flights outside the EU between 1,500 and 3,500 km, you receive Voucher Type B valued at EUR 500 (non-refundable) or EUR 400 (cash payment).

  • For original flights outside the EU over 3,500 km, you receive Voucher Type C valued at EUR 800 (non-refundable) or EUR 600 (cash payment).

Your voucher will specify whether it is non-refundable or a cash payment.

A non-refundable travel voucher can be utilized to book a new flight or additional options. Similarly, a cash payment can be used for a new flight, extra options, or exchanged for cash. If you prefer using it for a new flight or additional  options, the higher value of the non-refundable voucher will apply.

KLM Airlines Compensation for your baggage

In spite of our best efforts to prevent it, baggage can infrequently  get lost, delayed, or damaged. If this happens, we have various refund and compensation options available for you.

Delayed baggage

Did you require purchasing extra items like clothing and toiletries at your destination because your checked baggage was delayed? Please report this to the airlines within 21 days from when your luggage was delivered. Remember to keep the receipts for the items you bought and send us a copy to request compensation for these expenses. We’ll do our best to help you.

Lost baggage

Something nobody wants to go through: losing your baggage. If your suitcase hasn't been returned within 21 days after your flight arrived, please contact KLM Airlines customer service. We'll work together to resolve this problem. It's possible that we may recommend contacting your insurance provider, as many policies cover losses depending on the item's value.

Damaged baggage

Unfortunately, there are situations where baggage can sustain damage while transporting. Normal handling may result in minor scratches, marks, or slight dents, which are usually considered part of regular wear and tear and are not covered by our liability.

If your baggage has been significantly damaged, please inform the baggage desk at the airport immediately. They will create a report to assist with your compensation claim. Moreover, you will be provided with details about a repair service if applicable.
